Hey Everyone! I have really really big news! Seriously, this might just rock your day…or week…or even month. In fact, it might just change your life, it’s that big.

God is bigger than _______________.

Yep, fill in the blank, play a MadLib, think about the biggest thing you can think of, the hardest problem you have tackled, the worst day you’ve ever had.

God is bigger.

In case you haven’t been watching any of the Air Force news lately, but it’s been pretty bad. Investigations, inadequate leadership, unprofessional behavior, and a number of other issues. Frankly, I’ve spent more days than I would like to wondering if we should still remain in an organization that, at least from my perspective, cares so little for its people.

Granted, Ben still has a sizeable commitment left for his military service so we aren’t going anyplace anytime soon. But it does make you stop and wonder. Why are we here? Why are we putting our family through such frequent deployments and separations? Why are we living so far from our families? Why are we waiting for an assignment (a change of station), unsure of what our future will be? In a very real way, I’ve allowed the faceless “Big Air Force” to be greater in power over my life than God.

All of these “Whys” can be overwhelming and lately, have been leading me to feelings of frustration. Rather than taking those “Whys” and relinquishing them to Jesus, I have been holding onto them tightly, chanting them over and over to myself. Just think of Gollum and the Precious and you’ll get an inkling of my near obsession. It’s incredible how deep a hole you can dig all by yourself. They also distract me from what’s really important and from the fact that God truly is bigger than them.

I am so thankful to have made some very inspirational friends during our short time in the Air Force. A few days ago I was texting with one who has moved away from us in the past year. They are currently waiting to find out what their next station will be as well, but their options are much more diverse than ours. One very real possibility is that her husband will deploy to the Middle East for a whole year. I asked her how she was feeling about that and whether she was starting to make any contingency plans if “Big Air Force” did send that awful assignment their way (I know I would be).

Here is her response:

“I have faith that God will keep our family together…As a wife I have trusted God to direct the Air Force on our behalf. I have always seen HIs provision, so I have to remember what He has done and trust He will continue to do the impossible.”

I was stunned. God is bigger than the Air Force??? God IS bigger than the Air Force! The immovable rock in my life is not only movable, God can move it to a place that will be best for me and my family.

This was reinforced for me just this week in preparing for a bible study. The author of our text referenced the book of Joshua, when God tells Joshua that he will be taking over for Moses. God says:

No one can withstand you as long as you live. As I was with Moses, I will be with you: I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and steadfast, so that you may give this people possession of the land I swore to their ancestors that I would give them. Only be strong and steadfast, being careful to observe the entire law which Moses my servant enjoined on you. Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go. – Joshua 1: 5-7

Joshua has to stay the course. Even if there is a seemingly immovable force in his way, he is not to deviate to the right or the left. He is not to indulge in the Why or the How.

Now, I may not understand at the time just how God is moving my immovable rock, or when or even how. But, I have to trust that He knows what’s best for us. And, humble pie here, what I believe to be best for our family may not actually be what God has in store.

I am so grateful to have this friend’s friendship. We all need friends that can hold us accountable and challenge us to be better people.
