How Young is Too Young?

There are many, many things in life that I do not want my young children exposed to yet. John is only 4. He doesn’t need to know that pirate swords usually hurt people in movies, that the dinosaurs are all dead, that there aren’t actually undersea animal rescuers that can talk (check out Octonauts), or that he doesn’t speak whale (thanks Nemo). He doesn’t need to know that water evaporates to form clouds which will drop rain. He doesn’t need to understand how electricity works. No one needs to clue him in on the number of calories he should be intaking in a day. He is 4 for Pete’s sake (anyone know Pete?).

There are people out there who believe that a child like John or my other daughters, 3 and 1 years old, are too young for religion, too young for faith, too young for Mass, too young for prayer. If I ever entertained these thoughts, my children have thankfully banished them. Here are just a few stories from our brief family life that I think illustrate that a child is never too young for God in their life.

Big News!

Hey Everyone! I have really really big news! Seriously, this might just rock your day…or week…or even month. In fact, it might just change your life, it’s that big.

Are you ready?

Sure?

God is bigger than _______________.

Yep, fill in the blank, play a MadLib, think about the biggest thing you can think of, the hardest problem you have tackled, the worst day you’ve ever had.

God is bigger.

In case you haven’t been watching any of the Air Force news lately, but it’s been pretty bad. Investigations, inadequate leadership, unprofessional behavior, and a number of other issues. Frankly, I’ve spent more days than I would like to wondering if we should still remain in an organization that, at least from my perspective, cares so little for its people.

Granted, Ben still has a sizeable commitment left for his military service so we aren’t going anyplace anytime soon. But it does make you stop and wonder. Why are we here? Why are we putting our family through such frequent deployments and separations? Why are we living so far from our families? Why are we waiting for an assignment (a change of station), unsure of what our future will be? In a very real way, I’ve allowed the faceless “Big Air Force” to be greater in power over my life than God.

Makin’ Rosaries

A few days ago we celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. One of the many messages Mary gave to the visionaries was the Oh My Jesus Prayer that we say at the end of each decade of the rosary. I decided to incorporate this apparition and prayer into our homeschooling for the day, since this is one prayer that my children do not know.

1014151317_HDROne of the things I learned how to do in college on a retreat was make the rope or cord rosaries. I absolutely love to make these, even today. I actually have a bunch of rope in my house left over from college, different groups, and a project I did for a retreat my mom was leading.

One of the things that I love about these rosaries is that they are pretty darn indestructible. This means that they are perfect for my kids to learn on. I dug into my bag of cord and of course, only found one. But, with so much extra cord, I figured I would just make one for John. While Rosie was excited to receive hers, John was ecstatic that I would actually be making one.
